I am SO. SO. EXCITED. It's finally time to head back home. Home is where the heart is. And my heart cannot wait to get back to VA. Normally, I'm excited for the feast of food associated with Thanksgiving. This year, Thanksgiving takes on a new meaning-- a specialness of being surrounded by family. They're the ones who root for you day in and day out, they're the ones who pick you up and encourage you to do your best, they're the ones that mean the most.
This past weekend, I've been working like a little busy bumblebee. I want to get AS MUCH done as possible. The to-do list of things that must be completed prior to airport departure: A completed, whole updated outline, start of another outline, handing in my final Writing memo, quasi- read ahead for next week's Monday classes, and brainstormed for a Torts complaint and response project.
I don't mind working hard hard hard ... if that means that in just a few short days I can be at home surrounded by my family without a care in the world (at least for four days). Then, sadly, I must leave paradise and head back to Vermont. And continue my sprints of homework sessions occupying all of my life. But that's how it has to be, and hey... it makes you stronger, right?
Back to the excitement:
Grandparents are coming to VA for Thanksgiving! I was just informed last week, so it's gonna be a packed house of all the best-est people! Cannot wait to see Mom and Dad. CANNOT WAIT until I get to give a big hug to my brother!!!! It's been almost four months since I saw him last-- seriously the LONGEST we've ever been apart. I have missed him so so much. And the dog--- it will be fabulous to just snuggle up with Lizzie and soak in her "doggy smell." Sounds silly, yes. But, hello-- it's been four months.
I am so so excited to travel, more excited to flee to VA, more excited to see my family and eat good food, and unrealistically excited to go to the UVA football game on Saturday! It'll be my first football game of the Fall 2011 season and it'll be a clincher.

Fall Madness
Well, yes, it HAS been forever since my last post. Quick synopsis of the past month. It's been a heck of a series of LOWS interspersed with some HIGHS. Nothing like a roller coaster ride to keep yourself sane, right? That answer would be NO.
School is school. There's never been enough time in the day, there's always something more you can be doing to prepare for class, and there's always a feeling of not being an adequate class performer. But thoughts like that get you in the dog house... and quickly. It's best to just move on, buck up, and try harder. And if that doesn't work, set some goals! Like, a snack break... or TV show (hello, BRAVO network)... or trip to the gym. Sometimes, you just need to make a "reassurance call," which means you make a quick dial to a friend or parent that will affirm your action plan for the day. They'll help you see through that you truly ARE trying your best, even though it doesn't feel like it at the time.
It's hard not to go crazy, and it's hard not to miss home. Just this past weekend at Mass, I was suddenly saddened when I couldn't hold hands or have the sign of peace with any of my Family after the Our Father. It dawned on me that I was one of those people with whom others shake hands with because it's the nice thing to do since that person appears lonely. But then, I had to snap out of the impending tears and realize that I wasn't alone. Isn't there a saying... "I carry your heart, I carry it in my heart." I think that rings true here. My best friends have been the ones that check in with me every three to four days, even if it's just to share a story of the day. I never have much in the way of gossip or stories to contribute, but just hearing from them makes the long days bearable.
I don't think you can ever stop learning about yourself. Being in this small town away from all that is familiar has cemented some things for me. For one, I know now, more than ever, that I truly can bribe myself to do just about anything. Pep talks to myself are completely necessary. Social event-planning is what makes my clock tick. I am a people person.... even though I really enjoy my time alone. Some days are made better by just taking an hour to work out at the gym and read a gossip magazine.
Life is all about learning. And sometimes, that doesn't include books.

Gamble Nation
For Fall Break, I met my sorority sisters in Atlantic City. What an interesting get-away. High points:
1. The state of New York takes FOREVER to drive through on a Friday night heading South. Suggestion: add street lights to your highways-- may prevent the DEER from being so prevalent on the side of the road. High stress problems.
2. Arriving 3 hours later than expected to the party... not so bad when your best friend gives you a GIANT hug in the lobby! Haven't seen her in three whole months!
3. Haven't been able to escape law school world since the middle of August. It felt nice to get away from all the "law school" talk.
4. One of the top moments: mid-morning walk / jog with my bestie on the Boardwalk! We got to witness a strike outside a casino, lots of souvenir shops, and naturally.... a parade of beauty pageant finalists in convertibles wearing either red or leopard dresses. You can't make this stuff up.
5. Dining out! It was so nice not to have to cook for myself. I literally started to get teary at lunch because it was so nice to have someone serve me. My friend thought I was crazy. I hope that someone out there empathizes with me. I am NOT crazy. Restaurants are a beautiful thing.
6. [Briefly] getting a shopping experience at the outlet shops. And by that, I got to see racks of clothes outside the Nike Factory Store.
When I returned later that afternoon to partake in their beautiful sidewalk sale, I was mid-way through a horrific allergic reaction. Red face. Deep breathing. Hives. Swollen lips.
My friend hailed me a cab and I went back to the hotel. Epi-pen shot later, a two hour nap, a snack of a Coke and pretzels--- and I was ready to join the group at dinner! I swear, it's a 50 - 50 chance of an allergic reaction for me whilst on vacation. Terrible, but true.
7. To top it all off, the whole group went out to dinner the last night... at rockin' Hard Rock Cafe. We literally shut that place down. And we all were such troopers that we got souvenir pint glasses to remember our rowdy experience forever and ever!
After dinner, we each had a photo shoot in front of the hotel:

Nothin' like a little Pot Roast
Does this Pot Roast not look absolutely delicious?
It had been waaaay too long since I last enjoyed some good beef for dinner.
After all, how can my family hail from Nebraska and me not have some quality steak in over 3 months? Simply not acceptable. So, I remedied that situation tonight. And it was sooooo worth it.
Anyone can do this recipe-- takes no time at all! All you need is 3/4 of a pound of a London Broil cut of beef. Then, peel about 5 medium sized potatoes. Add about 1 and 1/2 cups of carrots. The best part is that all the seasoning and included bag comes in a seasoning packet you can find in the grocery store! Takes only 10 minutes of prep time, and 2 hours of solid oven time!
Good for date night too! Perhaps I can use said recipe to get myself a date! Haha, one can only hope.
Here's to good eating ya'll!

Weather and Fashion-- Why no compliance?
It's been a pretty normal past two days... High points:
First meeting as a newly elected officer! It was great to listen to all the speakers, and get to know more of the faculty members. Plus, there was Chinese food... whoever invented the idea of a dinner meeting was a GENIUS.
Weather never cooperates with my "cute outfit" days. Naturally, I dressed up for my first meeting but did not account for the flood-like waters on my walk back from said meeting. My pants were soaked from mid-thigh all the way down! And my poor, poor flats... they were quite wet from the 4 inches of water on the sidewalk!
Due to my run-in with the rain, I was not feeling the whole "go out and socialize on a Thursday evening whilst playing Trivia" idea. Instead, I went into nerd - mom mode. I did some quality homework for two hours and then snuggled up in my PJs to download new tunes to my iPod. Oh, and of course had to catch the latest episode of Jersey Shore. I just can't look away-- it's too captivating.
I leave you with the best visual of the night....
Me, snuggled in my latest Lilly Pulitzer teal & pink printed pajamas. My adorable purple and lime green lamp dimly providing light to the bedroom. Reading the beautiful "True Prep" book as my first 'fun read' since being at school. It makes me miss all my sorority sisters and captivating undergraduate life in small-town Virginia. Oh, to be back below the Mason-Dixon....
Welp, it's Friday night and I'm going out on the town. I'm ignoring the weather reports and am headed out in a gorgeous J.Crew orange sundress coupled with a jet-setting jean jacket. And of course, my latest steal--- carmel suede flats with cute gold buckles. Here's to a fashionably-fun evening, ya'll. Cheers!

Victory!
You know that feeling when it's Christmas Eve and you know that Santa is coming within the next 8 hours, but you just don't know when? And you don't know what he will bring?
Well, that's how I've felt for the past 4 hours waiting for campus election results! Umm, cue the "I'm just gonna log into campus email again to see if it's been posted yet." Never mind the fact that I just checked 7 minutes ago. Well, I am proud to say that I am an officer-elect! I am ever-so excited to learn more about how the school operates, and hopefully have a hand in some great ideas for the student body!
Today, as every Wednesday, is a mad rush to get as much homework done as possible in order to be prepared for tomorrow. Tonight was special in that I also had to work on the final draft of my first legal memo! What a great milestone.
I enjoyed the opportunity to take in a few extra minutes this afternoon and chat with my mom on the phone. She was taking our dog on a walk around the neighborhood back home and filling me in on the latest " 'hood happenings ". It was great to just sit back, listen to her day, and share our funny stories of the day with each other. Like mother, like daughter. We always know how to have a good laugh out of the day's events.
I bid you goodnight. Up early to begin the study session!

Good Points
Today was a busy day, but overall productive. Had some of my favorite elements such as:
1. I stayed on schedule. Yes, I do find it VERY helpful to schedule my every move during the day so as to optimize my studying and "just plain breathing" time. Sounds excessive, but it keeps me sane.
2. I answered a question in class. The professor acknowledged the answer, then moved on. No follow-ups, no nothing. We went on to the next case. SCORE for a succinct answer!
3. I went to the gym. I love escaping the little town and getting a little sweaty (well, a lot sweaty, but hey-- burn those calories!).
4. I got to listen to the radio! Nothing like a 20 minute drive times two to let yourself JAM OUT to good ole' country music... and throw in some rap in there too. Holla to Eminem.
5. Scrumptious, well-balanced meal. I kid you not-- in 45 minutes, with minimal effort: baked potato, baked asparagus, and smoked salmon. It was DELICIOUS and made me miss home.
6. All materials are printed for tomorrow and there was even time for couch dwelling for 20 minutes!
Onward, for it is definitely my bedtime now!

Be Boppin' around Town
So, it has been a while since I've been on here.... And for that, I apologize!
Law life is getting' crazy, but this weekend I had several opportunities to live and socialize like a real 20-something again! Friday night, I went out with some friends to a new city in New Hampshire to sample some ethnic cuisine. I have to say, it felt so nice to have girl-talk in a nice restaurant and not have to make my own meal! I totally get what my Mom has been saying all these years about enjoying the nice "one night out a week" to have a chance to relax and really enjoy a meal and your company. As soon as we got back to our town, we went right out to our local spot... and it was bumpin'. All of us law students enjoyed the cheap night out-- $1 drinks!
After Friday night, it's always nothin' but studying... but I was asked to join a Dinner Club and our first meeting was this past Saturday. It was nice to get to hang out with some students from another section and again, enjoy a meal and company! Had lots of great conversations and a few healthy laughs. Plus, who doesn't love a chance to display a new set of outfits?
Social hour continued this morning when I went with a group of people to the local pancake Mom and Pop shop. Their specialty is pancakes and waffles, but alas me and my allergy, I had some mighty fine eggs and bacon! As soon as I got back to my place, it was down to the study grind and I am proud to say that I got most of my "to do" list done! Rounded out the evening by traveling back to NH to pick up some gas and groceries. Thrilling errands, I know.
Here's hoping to as smooth a week as possible! Chat soon, I promise!

Wonderful Words
Just got a great email from one of my organizations.
It had a great quote that I just had to share with ya'll:
"Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself." -John Dewey, 1879
It's been a great educational day for me... had a successful "cold call." I didn't pass out from nervousness and had a very competent answer that was referenced another time later in class! A success for me! I'd like to improve my answer clarity next time that I'm called on... but it's a learning game, I guess. Hahaha-- that was a pretty weak joke.
Weekend updates soon, right now I'm just trying to tread water with my assignments...

Yay First Week!
So, it's been a while since I've last posted. It has been crazy here!
First, who would've thought that when I moved from Virginia to Vermont that I would experience a torrential hurricane in late August?? Certainly not me! There are many people in the town that've been affected by the incredible flooding that occurred. The river rose about 21 feet over normal levels and I have never seen water rushing like that before. Businesses were destroyed, homes torn or swept away, and livelihoods affected. My heart goes out to those families. I am so lucky to have not experienced any property damage at my apartment.
The hurricane certainly brought the law school community closer together. I, for one, really enjoyed the opportunity to get to know people better during the days following the hurricane when we didn't have school or electricity. Oh yea, school was cancelled for TWO DAYS. We went on walks, had update chats on the sidewalks, a free town lunch on the green, and a lovely potluck dinner by the light of one lampshade!! We were lucky enough to have a generator that powers both the refrigerator and one other optional device--- computer, phone, or a lamp at night.
First week of classes. And by week, I mean Wednesday through Friday. It was wild. It was nerve-wracking. It was exciting. I sometimes felt like I couldn't breathe, or that my heart would stop beating. But, the important part is what I've been focusing on: I SURVIVED. I now have first-hand experience with what law school really is like and how it operated within the classroom. Lots left to learn, but I'm just gonna keep truckin' along.
Best event of the week: MY BIRTHDAY!! Twenty-three, and I feel good. It also happened to fall on the first day of school. That hasn't happened since the fifth grade! I had three classes that day and did a LOT of reading prep for the next day's classes. I did, however, chug along so that by 8 PM, I was done with school and ready to be the birthday girl! I watched Sex and the City episodes while I opened the most thoughtful cards and gifts from my friends and family. I'm not an emotional person (I actually hate any display of emotion) but all the well-wishes and thoughtfulness in the cards seriously made me cry.
I had to pull it together and put on my favorite Kerry side... the PARTY HOSTESS. I invited some new friend- 1Ls and neighbors over for a brief "birthday party" at my apartment. I baked a splendid marble cake complete with sprinkles, of course! I presented it as a birthday celebration/ study break to the attendees and we all had cake and beer. What a great combo, right? It was the perfect end to a birthday day.
The rest of the week was crazy as well... but weekend updates to come later!

Real World? Bleh.
So... hallmark of being in the real world? Being on the phone for two and a half hours heckling with two different banks and a cable company. Why do companies make it so difficult to understand their billing practices? Hopefully I got it all squared away today so I don't have to revisit it!
Today was the last day of Orientation and it went well-- relatively worry free. I also went to the library for the first time to study-- went right to the second floor carrels next to the windows. I got lots done and was able to make it back to home base in time for a scrumptious dinner!
On the docket was... home-made pizza with zucchini, red pepper, onion, and pepperoni. I made a nice side salad with fresh tomatoes and carrots with a little side of balsamic vinaigrette. It was one of the best meals I've made since being in the state!
Tomorrow's a free day and it's going to be grand. Have lots of plans and am ready to mingle!

Long Days
Ever had one of those days where you just go and go and go, without taking a break, and then just get to a point where you have an intense headache? Yea, that hit me at about 11:45 yesterday night. It was a really long day of making impressions and I just needed a re-charge.
So, recap of yesterday: long day of sessions for Orientation, met lots of new people (there are so many people from all over the country!), went on a hike to the top of the mountains in my town with the Dean, had a BBQ on the quad lawn, did my first load of laundry at the new place, and did a good portion of reading for a course.
Onward to today... We took a field trip to the state capitol (about 45 minutes away) and I thought it was a great opportunity to see and hear from the state's legislative and judicial leaders. As is the case in any state, there was a little bit of underlying political tension but I thought that it was great to hear from people who make the state work!
When I got back from the trip, I slipped right into homework mode and really got things pumping for about an hour. I then had a chance to go on a run down the road, followed by my first official stop at the school gym that I just joined for the small price of $40. It was a great workout--- even went down into the basement to lift some free weights. Watch out, I'm gettin' buff. The rest of the evening was pretty normal-- discover dinner possibilities, select quickest option, eat, clean. Best part of the night though was my phone date with my friend from NOVa!!! It was so nice to hear about each other's new adventures in our respective new schools/ careers. I am so fortunate to have such great friends, even when I'm so far from home.
Last day of Orientation tomorrow! Getting close to the beginning of the term, yikes!
The world still revolves...
Even when you're in law school. It's a good thing to keep in mind the next few weeks! Today was great-- Orientation was off to a smashing start and it feels good to already have a lay of the land.
Amid the Orientation craziness, I had to deal with cell phone issues! I cannot for the life of me call my mom without getting answered by my own voicemail! Technology these days is so essential, I take these minor mishaps and construe them as terrible catastrophes!
Sharing stories about my day with loved ones is one of the easiest ways to feel "at home" when I'm not physically at home. I was fortunately able to call my parents on a land line and catch up with them about their day with the grandparents and aunt/ cousin dynamic in Nebraska. I also got an unexpected call from my brother while he was walking back to the fraternity house. It's a cardinal rule in my family that college kids only place calls while they are walking to or from somewhere on campus. hehe. Coming right out of Orientation, one of my best friends from DC even gave me a call to see how the big day of Orientation went! I got the low down of what she's been up to the past week and I got the chance to share about the little town, school, and people I've met so far! And as I type right this second, I am coordinating a scheduled phone date with another DC friend for later in the week! It's been a catch-up kind of day!
Tomorrow's a packed day, and I'm excited for all the free food and festivities!

Small Differences
Today I thought that I'd scope out the closest Catholic Church. I chose the 10:30 A.M. Mass and did not expect what I walked into! It just didn't have that "home-y" feel to it. The lack of ANY singing may have had something to do with it or the fact that the priest was a visiting priest, not the parish priest. The Mass was, however, a quick one-- only 45 minutes. Whoosh. I'm willing to give it another whirl though-- perhaps next weekend.
I went for a little escapade in the heart of NH. Figured that I had already driven 25 minutes in the direction of civilization-- why not just continue on my way another 10 minutes? I dropped by Shaw's grocery store to pick up the Sunday paper. My number one reason for doing so? THE COUPONS. I hopped in my car, went down the road to Panera and sat there like an 80+ year old lady reading the paper. The most hilarious part was the fact that I packed a pair of scissors and actually cut out coupons amid the lunch hour hustle and bustle. CLUTCH.
I then stopped by my favorite store, TJ Maxx to pick up some essentials for the new kitchen. It's amazing how much you take advantage of Momma's kitchen and all of its contents while you're living at home!! I had a little more time so I stopped by WalMart. Sadly, this area does not have a Target store. Booo.
I galavanted back to the town and got some reading done. Gotta love those amendments! I went on a nice run through town and had a really good running day jammin' to some rap. Even got a little adventurous and went further outside the town than I'd been before. There are so many cute farmhouses! Once again, I had to decide what to make for dinner. I made a lovely Thai dish of "Kerry Pad Thai." It was scrumptious and there is even another dinner's worth of leftovers!
Tomorrow is the start of Orientation... Hopefully I'll surpass my quota of my mom's mandated "one new friend a day"!

Get Ready in Ten Minutes--- We're headed out!
Today got started with a bang when I woke up and had about 15 minutes to become 'presentable' for the arrival of my landlord. When is it appropriate to stay in your PJ's anyway? I didn't know, so I went ahead and changed into some Norts, threw my hair into a "I just woke up and have crazy bear hair" ponytail. Then I went downstairs and tuned into the news. I just love watching the news in the morning to see what's happened in the world and/or the great USA. Then, I made some scrumptious French toast. Aaaand, my landlord arrived right as I was pulling the bread off the stove. That dang Murphy's law. My closet shelf was able to be fixed, so the untimely arrival was worth it in my mind.
Mid-morning, I was invited to head out into the Green Mountain State on a road trip to go swimming in the river. Did I ask, "What river might we be going to?" No I did not. I threw on my bathing suit, brushed my teeth, and was out the door in fifteen minutes! I was ready to join in on an adventure in my new state! It was a great day. The countryside here reminds me of aspects of West Virginia and is dotted with lovely little towns. The trip that was supposed to take an hour ended up taking about an hour and a half to get to the swimming spot. The funny thing is that I never knew when we were lost! My only clues were the pullover into a parking lot and the driver's announcement: "I don't think we're going the right way." I really was just along for the ride!!
We stopped into a little cafe (actually famous for their Maple syrup milkshakes) for lunch and I indulged in a hamburger, chips, and a pop! We continued on our ride for another thirty minutes and then arrived at the destination place-- a cool swimming hole that had lots and LOTS of cliffs to jump. It had 5 ft, 8 ft, 12 ft, & 20 ft jumps. There was even a 30+ ft jump! I did not partake in any of the jumping (I have NO idea where the closest hospital and/or dentist might be located in this state!) but I did have a lot of fun watching the crazy jumps, flips, and dives of the other daring park visitors. We ended up staying along the river for about 2 hours and getting back to the apartment at 6 o'clock.
Popped in the shower, and my next thought was... what's for dinner? Leftover chicken of course! And what to add to that lovely leftover? I boiled up some pasta, microwaved some marinara sauce and frozen broccoli, and sliced a piece (OK-- two pieces!) of French bread. Great meal!
Hoping to have a relaxing rest of the night, perhaps eat a fresh peach and watch a movie!
Planning on heading out to the "big city" tomorrow--- there'll be fresh adventures for sure!

It's the small things
Sometimes it's just the small things that make your day great.
Today I got the chance to Skype with my brother for the first time ever! We caught up about our past week's activities and showed each other our respective new rooms. Having missed his move-in to University, I was glad to have the chance to see how his room turned out. It was quite clean for a fraternity house! I even twisted my computer around and showed him my new digs in the Green Mountain State. Felt like we were in the same place for once!
I'm perfectly capable of cooking but sometimes it's getting the cooking process started that's the hard part for me. Today I went from making a dinner of baked chicken with fresh broccoli and side salad to making just a huge salad topped with chicken, veggies, and balsamic vinegar. It hit the spot!
Tomorrow brings new adventures... and new 'small things' to appreciate.
